The company has long been trying to merge the PlayStation brand with a smartphone. Sony's most famous development is the Xperia Play, a “PlayStation phone” that was ahead of its time (like gaming phones like the ROG Phone 5) but failed in the market.

Sony intends to attract a much wider audience to the PlayStation brand and profit from in-app purchases. Games like Fortnite, PUBG and Roblox owe much of their success to mobile players.

Bloomberg previously published an investigation into the problems of Sony's gaming division. According to the material, the corporation adheres to a conservative approach, relies on well-known franchises and blockbuster games and avoids the risks associated with supporting small projects. Because of this, the number of studios and development projects is decreasing, and the future of the entire PlayStation ecosystem remains uncertain, the authors of the material conclude.
